ICRISAT is seeking applications from a dynamic and highly innovative scientist to undertake crop-livestock systems and natural resource management who has a global research perspective. The Scientist-Crop Livestock (Internationally Recruited Staff) will be based at ICRISAT Headquarters near Greater Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, working within the Research Program on Resilient Dryland Systems (RDS). The Scientist will contribute to the CGIAR Research on ‘Dryland Systems: Integrated Agricultural Production Systems for the Poor and Vulnerable in Dry Areas’ and other CGIAR Research Program initiatives.TheDryland Systems work of ICRISAT and its partners currently focus on three states in India (Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka) with highly diverse farming systems ranging from mixed crop-livestock systems to higher potential crop dominated systems.
The Position:
- Contribute to ICRISAT efforts in the CGIAR Research Programs of Dryland Systems (CRP-DS) and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) via designing, implementing and communicating on-farm participatory research at action sites located in India (Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka).
- Assist with coordinating activities and managing partnerships in South Asia and designing and implementing cross site activities that identify common opportunities for intervention strategies (For example, increasing crop water use efficiency).
- Provide disciplinary science leadership in the area of soil, crop and forage sciences with an empathy for the context in which resource constrained smallholder farmers operate.
- Design and implement coherent and relevant applied research and produce research reports and scientific publications from this work.
- Contribute to thinking critically about research IN development and developing new funding initiatives.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams from ICRISAT and other CGIAR and with National Agricultural Research Institutes, regional organizations and development partners.
- Contribute to the resource mobilization efforts of ICRISAT and the CGIAR Research Programs, especially CCAFS, DS and WLE (http://www.cgiar.org/our-research/cgiar-research-programs/) through writing research proposals, building capacity in our partners, engaging with the University sector by co-supervising postgraduate students.
The Person:
- A PhD in natural resource management or ecology, livestock & pastoral systems or related agricultural discipline with 5 to 10 years’ experience in systems related research.
- A good publication record including multiple international journal publications demonstrating an ability to lead and publish on farm research.
- Proven track record in writing successfully funded proposals
- Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in addressing the urgent issues facing the communities in the drylands of South Asia.
- Ability and willingness to travel frequently in the rural areas of South Asia and internationally as required.
- Knowledge of and experience in using farming systems analytical tools (i.e. crop models, climate analysis techniques, farm bio-economic analysis etc.).
- Sensitivity to the importance of considering gender issues in research, development and extension.
- Fluency in English essential and in Hindi desirable.

The Reward:
This is an internationally recruited staff position with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars.
